Ian Rowland

Candidate - Wick St Lawrence and St Georges

#I have lived in St Georges, Weston super Mare for over ten years. I am a teacher and feel passionate about the life chances of the young people of Weston super Mare. This means, not only should the schools that you send your sons and daughters to be outstanding, but they should be able to go on and have every opportunity to become the best they can be. This means that they should have choices for their further education giving them every opportunity to succeed in life.

I am interested in making sure Weston super Mare and North Somerset give our young people the best start in life. Making sure our schools and colleges are world class but also understanding the local issues, such as, making sure we don’t lose our Italian gardens to the college. There is plenty of space in Weston without losing some of our best tourist attractions. Tourism has been massively under-valued under the current management. They are not listening to the people of Weston super Mare and are not fulfilling their promises. They have continually stopped local businesses from developing with the debacle of Dolphin Square just one example. Have they encouraged enough new business to the area? We only have to look at the thousands of people who leave Weston super Mare every day for work to know that things could be greatly improved.

I am currently Chairman of St Georges Parish Council and have secured funding for the resurfacing of roads, making sure our community centre remains the envy of other parishes and looking into working with the Football Association to develop a mini’s football team with suitable pitches and modern changing rooms. I am somebody who likes to get things done and I would like the opportunity to improve Weston super Mare in the same way that I have for the people of St Georges.

I know with the support of local people we can make Weston super Mare the premiere location it once was. We are proud of our town but unfortunately those that are currently running it are NOT.

What do I stand for? Weston super Mare to be run by local people, for local people. Making sure current businesses feel supported and new ones welcomed and embraced. This will give the next generation the opportunities they deserve.
