Steve Bridges

Candidate - Banwell and Winscombe

I have lived in Winscombe and Banwell ward for over 57 years, having been educated at Churchill then going on to Weston-super-Mare technical college.

As a young man I was lucky enough to secure two summers within the Tropicana (The Pool) as a lifeguard; it breaks my heart to see such a much loved piece of Weston's history being neglected and left in such disrepair.
I have been Chairman and subsequent President of Winscombe Rugby Club from 1995-2010, was an active member of Winscombe Parish Council for 12 years, being involved with chairing many committees. I am also currently Chairman of our Community Safety Local Action Team, Chairman of the Recreation Ground Committee and a member of Environment and Planning committees.
One of the issues I was involved with as a Parish Councillor was to wrestle the local public toilets in Winscombe off North Somerset Council, who appear quite keen to close them all down. They have now been transferred into the ownership of the Parish Council who are running them very successfully.
I am firm believer in keeping Party politics out of local Councils. I feel the current administration within North Somerset Council have lost their way, direction, leadership, drive and the will to succeed. North Somerset Council is stagnating and needs rejuvenation, the only way to achieve this is to bring in new blood who have fresh ideas and approaches, to pick up the neglected projects and to positively implement localism within our communities.
I am very keen to support local projects and charity's having spent 30 years in the Royal Navy, the Help for Heroes charity is very dear to my heart and in July this year I held a World War I Commemoration Dinner and Charity Ball for 200 guests.
I have a 'can do' attitude and believe in being a 'doer' and not just a 'talker'. I am a very sociable and convivial person but with a strong will and determination and believe democracy and transparency is the way forward. Your issues are my issues.
